In the fourth video about the Shellfire Box, we show you how you can secure the web interface by setting a password and how to assign a static ip address to the Box, in case the router does not automatically assign ip addresses.
Warning: Only recomended for advanced users due to its very technical content
In this video, you will see
- how to access the advanced web interface
- how to assign a password for the web interface
- how to setup the box in a network without dhcp server
In the next video, we will be way more practical. Using an extensive example, we will demonstrate using the box at home with multiple devices. We will use an older smart tv to connect to the box using an ethernet cable while adminstrating the box using a smartphone (because using the web interface on a smart tv would be unpractical).
So in most modern network environments, especially at home, the router’s wifi that you connect to usually automatically assigns you an ip address. This is done with a technology called DHCP. In these networks, all you ever need to do to setup a new device is enter the wifi password or connect to the router via ethernet cable and the router will then automatically assign you an ip address and you are good to use the router for surfing the internet.
Again, this is the case in many environments.
However in other cases (and you probably know when this is the case) – for WHATEVER reason – you need to assign static ip addresses to your devices. When connecting the Shellfire Box to your router, you will then need to assign a static IP address to your Shellfire Box. So let’s do this.
As you can see here, I have already connected the Shellfire Box to my router, however, the led is not led – this indicates that the box has not been able to connect itself to the vpn. In my case, it wasn’t even able to connect to my router – because the router offers no DHCP.
I am also connected to the Shellfire Box’s wifi – that works, independent from the Box’s connection to the router.
So I’ll fire up the Web UI here at http://sf.box and as you can see – the box is, as expected, not connected.
In order to assign the box a static ip address, we now scroll all the way down and enable the advanced web interface by clicking on the button “Enable Advanced Mode”
You can see that you are in the advanced mode when you see the black bar in the top. The advanced mode reminds us first to set a password – we don’t have to, but this is something we recommend anyway for the advanced user, so I will set a password right now by clicking on that link here. I will enter the password twice.
Hitting the return key on your keyboard will not work here, you need scroll all the way down and click on the save button.
Okay, so in order to configure the ip address, we will select network -> interfaces in the top menu
In the protocol drop down menu, I select “static address” and click on “change protocol”.
In the field ipv4 address I enter the IP I want to assign to my shellfire box, e.g. 192.168.0.229
in the subnet dropdown, I select 255.255.255.0
In the gateway field, I enter the IP address of my router, in my case that is 192.168.0.1
In the dns field, I enter a dns server I know from Google: 184.108.40.206
Then I click on Save & Apply, wait a little moment, and then “Back to Overview”.
In the overview area here, I hit the “connect” button for the wan interface to make sure it connects properly to my router.
In the top menu, I can then go back to the Shellfire Box app by selecting Services -> Shellfire Box. Then I click on “connect” and now the box is able to connect to the Shellfire VPN Service, even in a network environment without a dhcp server.
